Reports indicate that Make has plowed through the songs Grief and Oceans of Sickness.

Grief is a quite straightforward emotional burst of, well, grief for all the unbearable horrific violent events where a family is killed by the father or mother. It is something that has touched us deeply on emotional level. Nothing will ever bring those innocent lives back. Everyone should feel the sorrow of what we have collectively lost, even reading the news makes us less human.

Oceans of Sickness deals with the personal struggle of having your person violated or consumed by something and where it will lead you. To be or not to be something that has no longer full control over itself?

Make began the recording of his vocal parts today with Pasi assisting (mainly looking at the monitors).

First off were Blood Eagle and Inward. Real track titles revealed, on Blood Eagle we go medieval on all sorts of society’s scum (google blood eagle for quite uncivilized behavior). Inward is more about introspection.

Now that we have opened the can of whoopass, worms and other disgusting stuff we will let you in on more info as the album unravels.

Bass guitar mostly done...mostly

Mikko The Predator set his sights on the album low end and blew the fucking thing into oblivion. Went through the songs like there is no tomorrow so he did all but 3 songs in what accounts to a day or so. Awesome.

Today we will do some leads. If all goes to plan we will be 90% done with all stringed instruments after today. We are quite sure that NONE of you expect THIS album.

This is definitely something new to us in so many ways. Can’t wait for all of you to hear it!

Today we will be mostly doing bass. Not the fish...

Oh yes! Mikko is on the prowl.

The time has come to pull out a fresh bass guitar and start dealing some death! Only in the hottest years this happens. And this year, it grows hot. We begin finding our fans. We’ll find them sometimes without their skins… and sometimes much, much worse.

We call him “El cazador trofeo de fanático de la música” which means the demon who makes trophies of fans.

It will be interesting to hear this stuff with the low end because the songs were p-r-e-t-t-y-f-u-c-k-i-n-g-h-e-a-v-y already with just the guitars and drums.

It will be brutal. What else to expect from a guy who practically IS the Predator.

Cover yourselves in mud. Run. Build defenses. You cannot hide. Even in space everyone will hear this low end.

Phew, it’s over. Finally.

We made it! Jaska and Tuomas are now officially done with the main tracks and only leads and some ukulele tracks are still missing. Some pretty aggressively melancholic funk coming up!

Next: Bass guitar.

End of SHRED day 2 and beginning of SHRED day 3

Ok, so, our SHRED day 2 was a total repetition of SHRED day 1 and again we got home so late that we have to make a recap of the events that unfolded yesterday.

We started at around 11am (11:00). Pasi came to help us with the recording so the player could actually concentrate on playing instead of worrying about the rest. We gathered that day 1 had been a good one and the songs recorded solid gold so we had a quick listen to the tunes from day 1 to make sure we didn’t imagine things. We certainly did not. The songs were fine and with a glad heart we ventured forward to tackle the remaining songs.

Just before beginning his take Jaska heard his workplace had had a huge accident with water pouring into the shop and ruining much of the inventory. I could tell he took it pretty hard. It was a grim river that we were rowing. To play or not to play? As hope was beginning to fade the studio door slammed shut behind us.

In the confined space with all the locked doors around us we felt like we were incarcerated. I am not entirely sure if that did anything to set the mood but some magic happened while Jaska went inward and started his take on the next song. In quick succession he recorded some jade colored tracks onto the poor monitors (which got yelled at by Jaska, Pasi and Tuomas a LOT, btw).

There was a sick ocean still haunting Jaska’s mind so we really had to clear his mind from all those snake like shivers down his spine. We had an album to do and by Crom we did it.

Mikko came by and listened to some of the material recorded. I think he cried a bit. Make also appeared and sat in the control room with a freakish smile on his face. That really fixed the mood and off we went to record total of 7 tunes. All solid grit with plenty of anguish.

It’s turning out to be an ok album. (Downplayed that a bit but you be the judge when the time comes)

Anyway, today is SHRED day 3! That means we will SHRED! Again.

End of SHRED day 1 and the beginning of SHRED day 2

Yesterday was the first SHRED day and of course we worked so late we didn’t post any update about what went on.

First we got to see latest addition to Pain Confessor arsenal, Jaakko Kunnas, in his natural environment. Then we headed to the studio and started to record guitars for the latest album. It appears that in a more controlled environment he becomes more aggressive (probably cannot breed in captivity) and for some reason started to yell at the monitors?

Anyway, we gave Jaakko aka Jaska a guitar to play with. It was fun watching the two really bond and even though it sounded like gravel at points we managed to capture his emotional distress, perhaps grief, of being taken from his natural habitat into an artificial environment and forced to actually work.

We gave up on the VOX. The Fender combo sounded a lot more punchy and as we were in a mind set of punching each other in the face most of the time it felt appropriate. Add HM-2 to the mix and we have something even Uncle Fester wouldn’t use.

Tuomas knows the ropes. He also has worked on 3 previous Pain Confessor albums which this one has pretty much nothing to do with as it is so that didn’t help. After Jaska’s most peculiar approach of cursing and flailing the guitar like a tyre-deprived gibbon Tuomas decided to channel his inner majestic falcon. It sounded like somebody captured a bloody eagle in a parakeet cage. Awesome!

The end result? 3 songs, 2 guys tired as hell, deadly sounding guitar tracks and Finland lost to fucking Canada. Today will be HELL!

Aki jogged the last trio (Slightly freedom depraved, Rancor, Outwards) all the way to the finish line and we are set for the guitars!

Second day of raising hell!

5 more tunes down, 3 to go. Aki bagged some faster compost today, yesterday would count as the more mid tempo day so that would make today the more up-tempo day then?

Songs in the bag: Shovel, Grease, Dove, Boots of Escaping, Reptilian Wishbone

Tomorrow it will be a fast tempo day, three tunes left for Aki and then it’s a few days off until Friday Jaska and Tuomas start doing…eh…something.

Ok, first day was a blast(beat)!

First on the menu was getting a feel for the kit, setting some basic setups and warming up. While Aki did his zen buddhist calmness exercises Jaska and Tuomas did a few “Betcha I can’t play this” videos (Coming soon! Where and when, no one knows?)

Anyway, we laid down some demo guitar tracks and jammed the songs and WHAM! After some 3-4 hours work Aki had ripped through 4 tracks (Emerald, Flood Beagle, Brim Giver and Opulent Circlet) like there was no tomorrow.

BUT THERE IS!

We have yet to tackle the rest of the album so tomorrow some more drums! Can’t wait for it!

A tiny update from the Pain Confessor HQ for ya!

We’ve been working on some 16 - 18 songs for the new album and today finally wrapped up the arrangements! Now we shall concentrate on full speed ahead training and make the last preparations before entering Studio Sound Supreme May 7th.

Some song titles (work titles, may change) Hubris, Gargantuan Shackles, Redeemer, Morbid visions, Gods will die, Fiery Thorns II

Some tech stuff for those interested:

Aki has been toying around with his Paiste 302 (the good ol’ classic!) drum kit and probably will drop almost all of his toms leaving only 12” rack tom and one 32” floor tom due to the songs not really requiring more. The guy has played pretty intense death metal before and now it’s a good chance to really shine with a smaller kit and more basic beats.

The guitar section has been tuned from previous albums that were in C to E standard tuning to make it tight. Hell, Metallica was at their best back in the day when they were in E.

Jaakko had used his TC Electronic-based rack for years already in his other bands but thankfully he got around to test some VOX amps. Yeah, you got it right, VOX! Talk about a huge change from Mesa Dual Rectifiers and Engls but what the hell, the Valvetronix VT50 sounds freakin’ AMAZING!

Tuomas steered back from his trusty Engl E530 and Roctron Velocity 300 and decided to give his old Fender Champ 70’s a shot. It’s pretty small but turn it up to eleven and hey presto! You get some tight snarl that would make Dimebag green with envy.

Both guitarists also use the good ole workhorse Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal pedal to give that extra boost.

Mikko still sticks with his Mesa Big Block and matching cab but the interesting part is that he will probably be recording the album with a Harley Benton HBP90. Why? Well the fucking thing sounds ten times better than anything he has used before!

Keyboards will be a key element playing most of the melodies on the album so Pasi will be going for a Hammond sound and also quite a lot of influences from Jean Michel Jarre. He owns EMS VCS 3 and EMS Synthi AKS synths like Jarre did and those will play a pivotal role in the final soundscape.

To create a deeper contrast between the heavy stuff Make stated the vocals will be mostly clean-ish and there will be quite a few visitors on the tracks. No name dropping but he has been in contact with younger generation artists and there will be collaborations like never before.

Spinefarm Records has signed Finnish melodeath crew Pain Confessor!

After releasing three well received albums Pain Confessor has been working on material for a new album since last year; on the up-coming summer band will literally lock themselves into a studio and the fourth yet untitled installment of their saga is to be released towards the end of 2012.

Formed back in 2002 Pain Confessor released their debut album ”Turmoil” in 2004. The sophomore ”Fearrage” saw the light of day two years later and the third, ”Purgatory of the Second Sun” in 2007. After a few changes in the lineup since the latest album the band is whole again. Celebrating their 10th anniversary the band climb the first steps of a new beginning.

Pain Confessorin is Make Kivistö (vocals), Mikko Kivistö (bass), Pasi Laihanen (keyboards), Jaakko Kunnas (guitar), Tuomas Kuusinen (guitar) ja Aki Kuusinen (drums).

Pain Confessor comments on the new album:

Kolme kehuttua albumia julkaissut Pain Confessor on työstänyt uutta albumiaan viime vuodesta lähtien: tulevana kesänä bändi sulkeutuu studioon ja neljäs, vielä nimeämätön levy julkaistaan vuoden 2012 lopulla.

Oh yeah, Pain Confessor ends live performances for the rest of 2011 to concentrate on writing new stuff to be released in the near future.
